Jennie Gaskin wrote a wonderful booklet called "Crochet Buttons Jewelry".  Jennie says the book is out of print so I'd suggest looking for it on eBay.  Here is a link to Jennie's website with other of her great designs. Country Yarns
Use fancier buttons, and more of them to get a different look.  These are bone buttons from the 1800s.

I'll write more detailed instructions next time I make a necklace and photography the steps - particularly making the loop for the closure.  But if in the meanwhile you need more information, please send me a note.

Button necklace with abalone and mother of pearl
My favorite necklaces are made of abalone and mother of pearl buttons.  Make a foundation chain of desired length with a bigger button for closure on one end and a loop on the other.  Go back down the foundation chain with singe or half-double crochet.  Every three stitches, chain a loop.  The loops are shorter near the ends and longer in the center.  Catch an odd number of buttons as you crochet the loop.  For example, three buttons near the ends, five buttons toward the center.  Here is a close-up of the center loops.

Or don't make loops at all and make a dense choker style necklace.

Two rows of small mother of pearl buttons.  Make one foundation chain of the desired length, with a bigger button on one end for the closure and a loop on the other.  Crochet on either side of the foundation chain with half-double crochet, catching a button in each stitch or every other stitch.  You can make the necklace lie smoothly or twist.  Another very nice necklace uses just a few (20 or so) very big buttons.
